Webinar on the Topic “Safety Officers:Challenges & Opportunities”.

Due to Covid 19 issues, we could not organize the regular professional development programmes as before and we have started conducting Webinar which will be useful to all our members though they are located all over India, it is planned on first and third Sunday of every month.
The first webinar was held on Sunday, June 7th 2020 between 11.00 AM & 12.00 PM.
Thiru Perumal Manoharan, President, SEA India, Engineer specialized in Industrial Safety, Environment and Occupational Health presented the first Webinar of SEA India on the topic “Safety Officers:Challenges & Opportunities”.
A large number of members from all over India participated in the webinar. During his presentation Perumal Manoharan,explained that the safety officers are facing a number of challenges in the course of their work and in all the challenges there are improvement opportunities which shall be identified and acted upon. He explained that the safety officers are required to have different types of skills to over come the challenges. He discussed the challenges due to the prevailing safety culture in the organizations, constraints due to the implementation of integrated management systems, problems in managing the migrant labour, bottlenecks arising out of the COVID 19, increased expectations from the managements, introduction of new and revised regulations, manpower related challenges, competency related issues, increased activities of statutory enforcements, challenges from new technologies etc.
He highlighted that the safety officers have opportunities with the recent trend of on line meetings, increased awareness on SOP, arrival of the concept of webinars, focusing more on administrative controls for improving safety performance,, proper allocation of available time between office work and field work, enhancing the knowledge and skills by self development, taking available opportunities to show case the individual skills, getting adoption to new technologies, opportunities to attend online courses etc.
In the conclusion he conveyed that Safety Officer's Philosophy shall be “You make it to Happen; Safety officer will support you to make it”.
